Promoting Biodiversity in the Peters Creek Watershed
|
|
Peters Creek, its many tributaries, ponds, wetlands and wooded slopes are wonderful natural amenities. They contain pockets of biodiversity that are worthy of long-term conservation. The fish species inhabiting the streams of the watershed have become more diverse as water quality has improved over the past several decades. Bird species requiring significant tracts of unfragmented interior forest, such as the Pileated Woodpecker, Wood Thrush and Yellow-throated Vireo, breed within the watersheds boundaries. Numerous wetlands throughout the watershed not only decrease the severity of flooding by soaking up excess stormwater but also provide habitat for Pennsylvania species of special concern including Jefferson's Salamander and Queen Snakes. The watershed's many wooded slopes harbor populations of Pennsylvania rare and endangered plant species including Snow-trillium and Wild Hyacinth.
